Default The Elitism of GvG

Hi all!
This is a subject that has been bugging me since I play Guild Wars, and I would like it to be discussed with you.

Apart from all the PvE vs PvP debates, one knows that the best part of GW in terms of PvP is the GvG. It's basically the type of the game that has more strategy and more communication between it's members.

The thing I keep bumping is guilds that normally play every time with the same people. I can understand that from the point of view purely competition wise, this is the correct thing to do, but hey no footbal players likes to go to the bench all the time, alas not even go to the trains.

So if you don't have much experience in GvG you're stuck without that part of GW. People have turned so much competitive that they don't want to risk a place for a newcomer to show it's value.

What's your opinion on this?

Join a guild that's looking for GVGers. Or, explain to your current guild how you're unhappy with the way they run it.

A guild GvG's with it's best members, that's not that strange to me... Prove yourself, and then ask if you could join some time

But Maxie that's the contradiction in it. How can you prove yourself if you don't have experience, and if you don't have experience how can you play?

Camp in HA hoping for a goog guild team to pick you up, then you can prove yourself worthy, you should probably practice in RA a lot. Monks are particullar aftersought.

I agree the PVP gap is hard to close. I personally would love to PVP more especially in TA or GvG but it is a steep learning curve after 3 campaigns. So if u really want experience in GvG and are not getting it in your current guild...start your own guild...Pretty sure you can have a hall and cape for under 20k...Its really not that hard to get 8-10 members in a guild..especially if u tell others like yourself why you are starting your own guild..........but be prepared to have you ass kicked alot....and while it is getting kicked .....stop the "match" and tell the other team that you guys are fairly new that you want to ask them a few question...tell em thanks for the info..resume or resign :P

I'd say get some basic experience on PvP-ing in RA or TA first before you step into GvG. HA might gives you PvP experiences too but dont hope too much on it(heroway ftl).

As for the elitism... I still have yet to see guilds recruiting people with r1 champion or so and often they just do a tryout instead of requiring you to have certain ranks and so.

You could look for a different guild that isn't quite as elitist. My guild tends to grab a few people and go, sure we follow a build, but we'll take anyone in the guild who can make a portion of the build, or even something close to it. We do critique each other when it's done, win or loose, though so we can learn from our mistakes.

I'd say that the elitism more often is based on historical reasons mainly instead of quality of play. Also it isn't that easy to see if a player is good or not, sure you can immediatly tell if it's bad, but the distance between normal and good isn't that defined.

in my guild we try to let everyone in...

what we do is: we form a team, and after every battle, we take those who are waiting and switch them with those who have played already, all we ask is for the player to have the skills for our build unlocked and the character he wants to play ready and waiting...

of course we are not looking to get very low on rank, because its impossible that way, but we have fun =]

I can't really see elitism in GvG being a problem. If you're in a guild that doesn't meet your needs, find another one. There are lots of people who just like to GvG for fun and they seem to always be looking for new recruits. Now that we have the guild channel on the party window, it might make recruitment even easier. Good luck.

I play from more than one year and started my own guild.
The path to high-end GvG is always the same.
Start in RA.
Get tired of morons.
Go in TA.
Play with friends. Know to win and to loose. Get player skills.
Go in HA.
More challenge here.
Go in GvG.
If you got enough skill with your teamamtes, you'll soon reach middle then high-end GvG. But High End GvG require a lot of practice, a constant awareness of the metagame, so, if you're a casual gamer (like I am) that's maybe not your choice.

It's who you know and the strength of your networking. If you know alot of people that PvP, you'll get experience quickly as you can talk to them, guest with them, and so on.

When a guild does not have a full core to play, guesting allows another player to develop ties and essentially break into the restricted nature of most gvg guilds.

Ask to get in your practice in scrimmages, or inbetween seasons when it doesn't effect the ladder.

The reality is MOST guilds have difficulty fetching 8 people to GvG every time. Only the top 10% have the ability, dedicated members, patience, drive, etc to play with the regular 8-10 people in every match. 90% of the ladder have 4-7 at any given time and willing to use anyone that is less than the ideal candidate.

This is your chance.

Vocalize your intent. You can't be shy. You can't expect it to be easy. Just come prepared (aka watch observer mode and farm some knowledge).
With some luck and skill, you will eventually become the one of the core player.

GvG is something that many people dedicate their GW time to instead of PvE and other forms of PvP.

Mid-level and high-end GvG is mostly about TIME and DEDICATION. you don't have to be uber elite to make it to the top 100 - hell even top 50. But you should have the patience and willingness to put in the time.

You can't take back a loss. People should understand that one fact when it comes to gvg.

I strongly suggest looking on the recruiting threads at Team-iQ, Team Quitter, and The Guild Hall. They usually have guilds of various levels that are looking for members to tryout. That's the best way to get into a guild's core.

Of course, to do that you are going to need some experience. Unfortunately, the game is really lacking in mid-level PvP options right now. Watch Observer Mode and read a lot of forums to get the knowledge you need, and just play whenever you can to get skill. Even TA groups with good players will make you better, and try to set up PUG GvG with anyone you know. Even if the people you know are relatively bad, setting up a special guild where you don't care about the ranking will get you a lot of play and improvement.

With the future changes to the ladder, it will become much easier for guilds to play without anything serious on the line. As a result, they should be more willing to guest newer players and just play for fun, rather than struggling to win every match.

You CAN break into high level GVG. It requires time and dedication, though.

1. It's not fun, but play hundreds of games with crappy/average guilds.

2. Progress to the point where you think you know how to play one profession above averge.

3. Arrange a try out with a decent guild (not hard to do if you follow some of the links in this thread) and apply to a guild that needs what you have to offer.

If you are good enough, someone will take you eventually. From there, its just about playing and trying to get better and better. Play enough in the top 100 and people will know you. Guest GVG will come easier, and thats where long term contacts will be made.
Good luck, have fun.
